Holi is a celebration of victory over evil. It also indicates the end of a long tiring winter and the arrival of spring. Holi is celebrated all over India. It is a Hindu festival. People from different parts of the country play Holi in different aspects. This makes Holi a rejuvenating and joyful festival. There are some reasons for every aspect of Holi. It holds different stories and their significance.

The festival is celebrated or played with great enthusiasm and zeal. It is celebrated in two parts - “Choti Holi” also known as “Holika Dahan” and “Dhulandi". People from different regions play Holi with their methodology and elegance. Although Holi is played widely across India with colours, in some parts, it is played with Flowers and several different things.

This year Holika Dahan will fall on 17th March and Dhulandi will be on 18th March. This year the festival will be celebrated with no restrictions following all of the rituals since the pandemic is sturdy.

On Holika Dahan, people will commemorate the festival by singing, dancing around the burning holy fire, and doing rounds around it called ‘parikrama’. Holika Dahan has its backstory and relevance. It signifies the victory of good over evil. Holika signifies evil and ‘Dahan’ means combustion. So it is observed to be the end of evil and inner demons in an individual. Holika is the demon sister of the evil king Hiranyakashyap. He was envious of his son ‘Prahlad’ because his son was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap hankered for power and wanted everyone to praise him. But to his stagger his son was against him. This made Hiranyakashyap furious and wanted to kill Prahlad. He strives for different ways to kill Prahlad but was a complete failure. Then the fierce king called out for his demon sister ‘Holika’ who was immune to fire to murder his son. But like every attempt, once again Prahlad was saved through his faith in Lord Vishnu. Consequently, Holika was burned to death due to the misuse of her powers. Since then on the occasion of Holika Dahan, it is considered as the defeat of evil and inner demons. The best way to celebrate Holi is to start the day by playing Holi bhajan with lyrics.

Holika Dahan is followed by the celebration of ‘Thulani’. It is celebrated with colours widely in the areas of Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, Barsana, Nandgaon. Holi is also a celebration of love as it is connected to Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha.
