Bhajans: An Ancient Indigenous Music

Bhajan, a term originally coming from the second-most ancient language Sanskrit, has its root drawn from the word 'Bhaj', which means reverence or worship, as in reverence to God or the Holy One. This can also be in a form of sharing and worshipping the ultimate power of the Universe. This is what 'Bhajana' is about. When we revere God, we are sharing the 'One' with every other being, existing under this infinite sky. Living or nonliving, we are all part of one energy and when we devote ourselves to the ultimate power with the guidance of Bhajan, we are creating a link between the energy contained within us and within every other being of this world.


In Hinduism, the word Bhajan has been used analogously to the term 'kirtan'. Kirtan, in its simplest form, is the recitation or chant of the name of the Holy One in a musical rhythm and can be found to have its origin coming from one of the four Vedas, namely Samaveda. The Vedic scripts in Samaveda Samhita are believed to not be read as a text but heard as a musical score sheet. This tradition was seen in Vedic times when people performed plays and sang verses to express their spiritual love towards God. Bhajan is believed to have come from the musical scriptures and traditions of ancient times.


To accurately define a bhajan is hard, as it can be anything, from a nimble chant of mantras to a very complex text directing unwavering faith in the Holy One. It is the usage of lively melodies and choruses that are sung repeatedly, to glorify the ultimate celestial being. Singing a bhajan is the way for a living to become close to the one he/she worships. It carries the soul of the person on its journey to reach the feeling of Oneness, i.e., one with the higher power.
